When developing the current design for Prove.no, we did go to great lengths to make sure everyone could use our website. Since our logs show that only about 1.5% of our visitors use 800×600 as a resolution, we decided that we should optimize the website for 1024×768 or higher. So that is our static width.
However, the way we designed the website, with a column of ads on the left, we figured out that we could keep the website accessible for those of our users stuck on old terminal clients or with really old hardware. So we implemented a small piece of Javascript that sniffs at your screen resolution, and removes those ads. Now the page magically fits on a 800×600 screen once Javascript loads.
Sometimes a small detail such as this can secure you that extra percent of customers.
